Audience Profile:
Method 1 - Surevy (Paper and Electronically)
I have creatyed a survey and then uploaded it onto
www.surveymonkey.com the use of surveymonkey has helped me gather a lot of audience feedback in such a short amount of time, with surveymonkey I was able to access all of the data I have gathered and have benefited me as well, as I don't need to have the paper copies of my survey with me at all times, as I would only need an Internet access to get to them at a faster rate.
The surveys can be seen here:
I also had paper copies of my survey, with a pepr copy of them I was able to sirectly ask audience feedback from students within my age range. having paper copies of my survey, I was able to use an Opportunity Sampling (in Psychology terms) (this is when I used students who were in the sixth form at a certain day and time, and I asked them to watch my music video or have a look of my Print Productions.)
Method 2 - Social Networking Sites - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
Witth the increasing use of these Social Networking sites, I used this to my advantage to promote my music video to a much wider audience, without having to comprimise on cost etc.
I first posted the final version of my video on to my personal Faceboook account,w hich is the largest Social Networking Account with more than 500 Million Active Users. With the use of Facebook Accounts, I had friends who were in the same age range as me and study similar subjects e.g. Art, Photography and Film Studies, and that they were able to give me "constructive criticism", with the majority of comments saying that they would like to see an increase the variety of camera angles used in the video.

I also posted my video to a much accessible Social Networking site, which is Twitter, the purpose I have done this is because my video would be much more accessbile to people not just within United Kingdom, but Worldwide, this can be done by the use of what is called "hashtags", in this case then when I posted the video on to my personal Twitter Account I used the hashtag "#mediastudes" by using this hashtag I was able to categorise my posts easily, therefore, when people are looking for posts that are related to Media Studies, they would be able to look at my video easily through "Youtube"

Another Social Networking site I have used is "Instagram" which is a picture-sharing Social Networking Site, In order to share my music video in Instagram, what I did was I took a screenshot of my video on my iPad and then uploaded the picture on to my personal Instagram account, with the purpose of the screenshot, I was able to give them a "sneek-peak" of my video, and most of my followers are familiar with my Performer (Kirsty) which could possibly entice them to watch the whole video.
The overall purpose of me using Social Networking sites is because of the proliferation of people using these sites, some people (including myself) have accounts on all of these social networking sites and the majority of my target audience are active users on these social networking sites.
I have always gained feedback throughout the construction process in both of my productions, not just from other students in my class but also from my lecturers, an example of feedback that I have is during the construction of my music video, I have mentioned in my planning that I would use Black and White and Colour throughout my music video, with advice from my lecturers they have advised me to have the video all in colour. However, I gained feedback from others I have converted my video from Black and White to Colour, and the feedback I have gathered said that they were confused with the plot, and when I have mentioned that the narrative of the video, they had advised me to have Black and White featured in my music video, so audiences are able to differentiate which scenes are the flashback and which scenes are the present.
The same feedback also occured on my Print Productions (see this
post) I planned to have the continuation of the Black and White theme, not just in my music video but also in my Print Productions, but however, when I showed the prototype of my Digipak to my lecturer and other students, if the
Black and White would appeal to their taste, and if they would buy the album, the majority said "No" and that the colour version would appeal more to them.
The majority of the demographic that I have asked were female, however I did ask some male audiences to fill in the surveys.
These screenshots are the response of a Male Demographic for my Print Productions
These screenshots are the response of a Female Demographic for my Print Productions
The response from both Demographics were unanimously the same. The majority of the audiences gave a positive feedback for my Print productions, all of the people I have asked, has rated the overall package a 3 or above.
However, the reception for my music video were more mixed to positive from the demographics, in the feedback I have gathered, the common comment I have found was that they found the narratice was a bit confusing, and that they also questioned me on why have I not used flashbacks in a much more traditional way.
I think the way that my demographic have responded could be because of the "Reception Theory", basically I thought that the audience would understand that the video was about Gay relationships and about getting over the loss of their relationship, and that when I encoded the video the way I wanted it to be shown to a mass audiences, but however, the video challenged a lot of media conventions throughout and I knew that it wouldn't be an audience's "Preferred Reading" as they could be possibly used to having the conventions I have challenged in a way they are more familiarised with, so therefore, when audiences have decoded the video they had a mixed response with the video.
Another theory I think that would explain why people would react to the video could be explained by a Blulmer and Katz in 1974 when they proposed the Uses and Gratifications Theory in which they stated that:
"Individuals might choose and use a text for the following purposes":
Diversion - Escape from everyday problems and routines.
Personal Relationships - Using the media for emotional and other interaction e.g. substituting soap operas for family life.
Personal Identity - Finding yourself reflected in texts, learning behaviour and values from texts.
Surveilance - Information which could be uselful for living.
I think that the 2nd and 3rd Bullet Point would apply to my Media Productions (Music Video and Print Productions), it could be that people who are Gay/Bisexual could be watching my music video and could relate to the storyline as it had happened to them, and they're just finding ways to move on.
I think that my audience feedback has significant value, because it has helped me see whether or not my media product would appeal to the mass market.
An example of would be the use of seascape, and that in nearly every single survey I have analsyed that they all like the "mise-en-scene" and the scenery that was used thorughout the Digipak. Here are some of the comments were
Comment 1 - "Backgrund, Pose of the girl and the name of all songs, it contributes to the genre"
Comment 2 - "Photography - Every Panel, The Mise-En-Scene"
Comment 3 - "I like the seaside feel, I like the layout of the poster and the text"
Evaluation of Questions used for Music Video and Print Productions
Some of the questions I have used are the same in both Productions which is why I would only evaluate some questions that are different from each production.
Music Video
- How much did you enjoy the music video? - I think that this question is important because it shows whether or not the audience would consider the video entertainment-worthy, if a person enjoyes the media text they are reading they are likely to read/watch it again.
- Did it hold your attention? - The purpose of a video is to promote the artist in context, and that in order to hold the audience's attention, the video of the single being released should hold the audience's attention, the average score for this question was "3" which means that only some sections of the video could possibly have catched the audience's attention.
- Hod you rate the camera work and editing? - This question is important as it says in Goodwin's Theory it is important to have close up shots of the artist (this would be a record label's request) as they would like to promote the artist, when I got the feedback I got an average score 3/4 and feedback from social networking sites have found that people wanted more camera angles. Editing is also important as it is a key aspect as to how audiences would consume the media text, if a video wasn't edited very well then they wouldn't encode the text the way a director would want to.
- How do you rate the standard of mise-en-scene? - This covers all aspects of mise-en-scene (Lighting, Location, Costume etc.) this is important as audiences would sometimes have stereotypical views of Lesbian/Gay Relationships and that being different the question could be marked low as they are not familiar with my scenario in a music video.
- Was the music video..... Too Short, Correct Length, Too Long, Don't Know? - This is important because if a record label is trying to promote an artist who is just about to debut in the music industry and their music video hasn't got the right length then audiences might get put off by the long length, in the music industry, album tracks have been shortened when releasing it as a single. An example would be Girls Aloud, their sing called Untouchable was 6:42 when they released it in their album "Out of Control" and when they released it as a single, they had the music cut down to just 3:49.
- Would you listen to it again?....Yes,No,Undecided - This question is important because if a song would have a good video then it is likely audiences would listen again, because if a person would reference a music video with a certain storyline, they would sometimes be able to identify the song, which is important.
- Can you suggest anything that could improve the appeal? - This is important because if the video is being targeted to a certain market and during the feedback process from that target amrket didn't like it then the changes need to be amde so audiences in that specific market would be able to identify with the video/song.
- Were there any aspects that you find offensive? i.e. represenation of race, gener, age, culture? - This is very important as some videos are just targeted in speciic markets, in order for the barrier of different cultures would be broken down. An example would be Cher Lloyd, she filmed 2 versions of her music video "Want U Back", she filmed one for United Kingdom (click the link) and one for the United States (click the link) both videos are distinctly different and promotes the single in each country successfully.
- Was there any part you found confusing or hard to understand? - This question is importantbecause if any parts of the video/narrative is difficult to understand then audiences wouldn't properly be able to encode the video and audiences would possibly get put off by it.
- Does the video reflect the style of music? - It is important because if the video is trying to promote a certain genre, then some people would disagree then the video, is not successfully doing this.
- Does the video successfully promote the artist/band/group? - This is very important because if the video is a debut of an artist, or the debut of their new work, then it is important that audiences consumes the data, the way the artist would've liked it.
Print Productions
How successfully is the Britishness of the package established? - This question is important is entering a new market, if they are entering a specific market, an example would be British artists enetering the American music market, some of them change their Digipak in order to promote them specifically to the american market.
Woud the covers encourage you to buy the digipak? - This quetsion is important, especially if consuemrs are buying the physical product in shops such as HMV, they would only see Panel 1 and Panel 4 due to packaging, or especially in online retailers such as iTunes and Spotify, they would only see the first panel, therefore if my 1st and 4th Panel were strong then I think this would encourage consumers to buy the Digipak.
Would the advert encourage you to go to an event by this artist - This is important because the Print Productions of an artist basically sets up the type of of music they would be producing and the genre they are linked to.
